Adaptive TOEIC test: a new offer for professionals

The online TOEIC Listening and Reading test is now available in an adaptive, 1-hour format.

To ensure that the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test continues to meet the current needs of test takers and users of TOEIC® Institutional Program scores, ETS is launching the adaptive TOEIC® Listening and Reading test.

Who is this test for?

Language schools and academic institutions now have the option of holding adaptive TOEIC test sessions for learners and students. This online test is shorter (1 hour, instead of the traditional 2-hour version of the test). The linear, 2-hour version is, of course, still available in print format and online.

Test format

The adaptive, online TOEIC Listening and Reading test comprises 90 questions and lasts approximately one hour. The questions are divided into two sections, and each section consists of two units.

  • Listening section: 45 questions (Unit 1 and Unit 2).
  • Reading section: 45 questions (Unit 1 and Unit 2).

For each section, test takers answer a series of questions (Unit 1) that is the same for everyone. Once Unit 1 is completed, test takers move on to Unit 2 and answer different questions based on their performance on Unit 1.

The question format is identical to the linear, 2-hour version of the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test.

Level of difficulty and score scale

Test questions have the same difficulty level as those on the linear, 2-hour TOEIC Listening and Reading test.

In addition, the adaptive, online TOEIC Listening and Reading test uses the same scoring scale (from 10 to 990 points) and the same corresponding scores for the CEFR (A1 to C1) as the linear, 2-hour TOEIC Listening and Reading test.

To recap

  • Listening section: 45 questions in 25 minutes
  • Reading section: 45 questions in 37 minutes. Each section has 2 units that adapt to the test taker’s performance.

Similarities with the linear version of 2h:

  • Question types
  • Scoring scale
  • Score mapping to the CEFR
