The TOEIC® Speaking and Writing tests measure oral and written English language skills for beginner to advanced levels, in a professional context. They determine a non-native English speaker's ability to communicate effectively in English with colleagues and clients.

The tests can be taken together, in a single test session, or separately.

The Speaking and Writing tests can be taken together, in a single test session, or separately. Test questions are based on current, real-life work scenarios.

Speaking test

Test-takers are given specific instructions, including the time allowed to prepare and present their answers. Test-takers record their answers to questions that are designed to measure various aspects of their speaking ability.

  • Questions 1-2: Read a text aloud
  • Questions 3-4: Describe a picture
  • Questions 5-7: Respond to questions
  • Questions 8-10: respond to questions using information provided
  • Question 11: Express an opinion

11 questions in 20 minutes.

Writing test

Test takers are given specific instructions, including a given time limit for their answers. Test takers write answers to questions that are designed to measure different aspects of their writing ability.

  • Questions 1-5: Write a sentence based on a picture
  • Question 6-7: Respond to a written request
  • Question 8: Write an opinion essay

Our Public Program test centers organize TOEIC® Speaking and Writing sessions throughout the year.

You can check the dates of the sessions offered by each test center and register directly via our website by clicking on the "Register" button. You'll easily find a public test center near you, to suit your availability and location.

You'll need to upload a passport-compliant photo before the day of the test, as this will appear on your score report.

If you are taking an English language course or are a student, your training organization, school or university may offer you the opportunity to take the test as part of your studies or training. In this case, please contact your school or university to find out how to register.

On the day of the test, please bring :

  • a valid form of identification bearing your name and signature
  • the admission form
  • a consent form for test-takers under the age of 18, completed and signed by a parent or guardian. You will not be allowed to enter the testing room without having duly completed and signed the consent form. Download the consent form.

On test day, you will be required to sign an admission form, which will be provided to you either in advance by e-mail during the registration process, or on the spot by test center staff. This admission form is essential for taking the test and will be collected by test center staff at the end of the session.

TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests are not "pass" or "fail" tests. Regardless of your level, you will receive a score report showing your scores for each skill assessed.

Scoring scale

  • Each skill is graded from 10 to 200 points.
  • Each result is correlated with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from level A1 to C1. Download the correlation grid.

Validity of results

  • Results are valid for 2 years.
  • The Public Program score report is valid worldwide.
  • Results can be consulted via the QR code on your digital score report, which you can pass on to a recruiter, employer, program director, or admissions officer.

Results delivery time

Your digital score report will be available in your online account within 10 to 15 working days from the date of the test. You will be notified by email.

If you take the test with a training organization or academic institution, your institution will send you your results directly, or your digital score report will be available in your online account.
