Psychometrics and educational measurement
Psychometrics and educational measurement are concerned with the theory and technique of measurement, which includes the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits. The field is primarily concerned with the study of differences between individuals. It involves two major research tasks, namely: the construction of instruments and procedures for measurement and the development and refinement of theoretical approaches to measurement.
Advancing quality and equity in education
At ETS, we have been working for more than 60 years to design tests that help to advance quality and equity in education worldwide. ETS is now the world's largest private educational testing and measurement organisation, and we continue, through rigorous research, to create high-quality assessments that accurately measure student performance and do not disadvantage any group of test takers because of differences in personal characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender or disability.
To help decision makers, score users, parents, test takers and others understand the complex standardised testing process; we provide here information about educational assessments that answers questions, such as:
- What is the purpose of standardised testing?
- How are ETS tests and test questions developed?
- How are standardised tests scored?
To get a better understanding about how ETS develops tests, you can check our dedicated page on test question development.
